Cycling Cape Town – Explore the Picturesque Cycling Routes

Cape Town is considered one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. The place also plays host to many high-profile cycling events such as the Cape Town Cycle Tour. There are 450km of cycle lanes across the city. From scenic mountain routes along the ocean to wide-open spaces surrounded by nature, grab your bike and experience some beautiful cycle routes in Cape Town.

There is a new cycle tour that will take you through South Africa’s Western Cape Province, called the Cross Cape Cycling Route. The picturesque cycling trail connects the towns of Plettenberg Bay and Stellenbosch that are 460 miles apart.

Cape Town Cycling

Cycling Cape Town through the Cross Cape route offers a truly remarkable way to experience the region. The route passes through the scenic and well-known Garden Route, which is often overlooked by visitors exploring the region by car. A suitable mountain bike and a rough plan are the only requirements to ride the Cross Cape route. Riders will be free where to start and stop along the way.

Leaving the Coastline
While cycling in Cape Town, riders will get to experience many remarkable sights. Most choose to break up the first quarter of the route by making stops at George, Oudtshoorn, and Knysna. After the lush green forests of Knysna, tranquil lagoons, and beautiful coastlines of Plett, riders will witness a change in scenery, especially as they head inland.

Entering the Klein Karoo
The Klein Karoo is dry and at times stark, but is no less beautiful than the lush forests you are leaving past. Most riders push through to Rooiberg in the saddle, which needs summiting the Rooiberg Pass.

After Rooiberg, cyclists can head along with the beautiful directions of Swellendam. Known as the Overberg, it is a popular town in the Western Cape region. Cyclists can find dozens of notable accommodation and restaurant options in Swellendam.

Entering the Cape
Though the entire traveling takes place within South Africa’s Western Cape province, however, you will feel like entering the true Cape, once you leave Swellendam. Cyclists cross wide rivers and skirt grain fields, traverse rolling mountains as they head towards the town of Greyton.

The town of Stellenbosch is the official ending point of the Cross Cape route, and from Greyton, it’s 66 miles away. The remaining two passes at Hellshoogte and Franschhoek will deliver breathtaking views as a final honor for covering the distance. The routes are open throughout the year, and riders can choose their adventure as they make their way along the safe, maintained tracks.
